Think scholarship should be more open, transparent and inclusive? Want to publish more openly? Concerned about reproducibility in research? Think data should be available for all? Want to find ways to be more collaborative, open and multidisciplinary in your work?
Whatever your career stage or background, we invite you to join us for this informal workshop to meet like-minded people from across campus, exchange ideas and experiences, and start working to foster Open Science here in Göttingen!
Scholarly communication has been slow to change to make full use of digital technologies. Most articles and books still look a lot like they did 300 years ago. Results appear months or years later than they should due to delays in peer review or publishing processes. Research is increasingly proving not to be reproducible. Potentially valuable datasets remain locked up on researchers’ hard-drives after projects have finished rather than being openly available on the Web for fresh analyses. Billions are poured into funding research, whose results are then given for free to publishers to lock up behind paywalls and embargoes, to be sold back to those same researchers.
The University of Göttingen is working to change this through, e.g., policies for Open Access and Research Data, services offered by the Göttingen State and University Library, infrastructure provided by the Göttingen eResearch Alliance, and leading involvement in international Open Science projects like OpenAIRE.eu. But Open Science is more than policies, services and projects – it’s about the practices, mindset and passion of researchers like you! This event hence aims to foster a new network of Open Scientists here in Göttingen, to bring together like-minded researchers to explore how we can pool our ideas, energy and skills to drive the evolution of the scholarly communications system.
